What Happens When You Drink Water with Baking Soda on an Empty Stomach

Soda is one of the most versatile home remedies and has been an integral part of my household for a long time. Again and again I think that I now know all the possible uses for baking soda . Until I finally get another idea of how it can make my life easier.

After baking soda a few times to relieve my occasional heartburn , I have come across several publications recently that recommend a cure with baking soda to balance the body’s acid-base balance.

But what is it and what do critical voices say about the soda cure? To answer these questions, I looked more closely at when it might make sense to take baking soda and what other ways are there to avoid overacidification of the body.

Formation and consequences of acidification

The balanced relationship between acids and bases forms an important basis for the functioning of our body. For example, many metabolic processes work most effectively in a neutral to slightly basic environment. In order to maintain this, we have to provide our body with sufficient basic minerals, at least as many representatives of alternative medical approaches see it. Other processes such as digestion in the stomach require an acidic environment, which is why it cannot be said in general that the body is acidic or basic.

It is indisputable that today’s widespread diet based on processed foods and the associated lack of minerals and other vital substances can negatively affect our metabolism. Heartburn , headache , susceptibility to infection, persistent fatigue and more are the possible consequences. The development of various diseases of civilization, from diabetes to an increasing number of allergies and cancer, is said to be promoted by a disturbed acid-base balance – for which scientific evidence is lacking in some cases.

Some alternative practitioners and other representatives of alternative medicine advise sufferers to carry out a sodium cure treatment in order to restore the balance between acids and bases.

Soda cure – how it works

The usual recommended application is simple and can be easily integrated into normal everyday life. All you need is baking soda (available in brick-and-mortar stores and online ) and fresh lemon juice.

Here’s how you do it:

In the morning after getting up on an empty stomach, pour ½ – 1 tsp of baking soda into a cup and pour 250 ml of warm water (not more than 50 degrees Celsius) over it and drink. After 10 minutes, pour a few drops of lemon juice into a glass of cold water and drink as well.

Then wait at least an hour for the next meal . In some publications, continuous intake over 30 days is recommended, others advise intervals of five days, followed by a five-day break until the next application .

Important information : Pregnant women and children are generally not advised to take a soda cure. People with heart problems and impaired kidney function should only take the course after consulting their doctor. Since baking soda can affect the absorption of other substances, you should also take medication at least two hours before or after taking baking soda.

Doubts, criticism and side effects of the soda cure

Proponents of the soda cure base their effectiveness on the basic character of the mineral. They describe the processes taking place in the body as follows:

After ingestion, the soda reacts with the stomach acid, which increases the pH in the stomach. In order to compensate for this increase, stored acidic metabolic products from other areas of the body are activated and thus neutralized. The lemon water also has a basic effect in the body and is intended to intensify the effect.

While the breakdown of the acids deposited in the body is difficult to prove and can hardly be explained physiologically, medical experts are critical of the long-term consumption of sodium bicarbonate. Because the stomach cells also react to the intervention in the gastric environment and increase the production of stomach acid (the so-called rebound effect), which in turn can lead to excessive acidification of the stomach. Another side effect when taking baking soda is an increased formation of carbon dioxide. Abdominal pain and a feeling of fullness as well as increased belching and flatulence can be the unpleasant consequences. In addition, overdosing on baking soda can also result in more serious illnesses.

Balance acid-base balance in everyday life

You have to decide for yourself whether the implementation of a soda cure is an option for you after weighing up the information and the background. Basically, in my opinion, it is only suitable as a temporary measure to support the body’s self-cleaning processes. It does not remove the causes of the imbalance that has arisen.

It is therefore much more crucial for a permanently healthy acid-base balance

a balanced diet with lots of fresh vegetables and salads

sufficient exercise in the fresh air (just a few minutes of walking or cycling can do a lot)

avoiding excessive stress

the adequate supply of liquid, preferably in the form of still water or herbal teas

avoiding carbonated drinks as well

largely avoiding luxury foods such as sugar, coffee, alcohol and cigarettes
